Change Detection Research Interests
My first work on change-blindness was done with eye-saccade contingent changes in reading. Since then, I have done experiments with R. Rensink and J. Clark using the "flicker" paradigm and the "mudsplash" technique. With H. Deubel we have used situations where the change occurs when a person blinks and eye movements are measured in order to determine the probability of change detection as a function of where the eye is looking. I use natural scenes, as will as displays consisting of jumbled letters of different colors, sizes and fonts. I approach the change blindness studies from the viewpoint of the theory of the "world as an outside memory", and with the idea that visual experience is constituted bylaws of sensorimotor contingency, and not by activation of a brain mechanism.
